West had called the batter out, although televised replays showed that the batter was safe. Although the box score does not reflect this next ejection, reliable press accounts report that home plate umpire CB Bucknor ejected Mets third baseman David Wright in the top of the 9th inning after Wright complained about Bucknor's strike zone from the dugout. The Phillies won the game 9-2. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. Had a foul tip that touched the ground before being caught by the catcher been correctly called, Ichiro's at bat would have continued. The Angels won the game 6-0. Major League Baseball games played Sunday, August 19, 2007: A complete slate of 15 games scheduled to be played on Sunday produced in 14 games played to completion and one rainout of the National League contest that was to be played in Chicago last night. Moreover, those 14 games produced a single ejection.

In Miami, where the Florida Marlins were hosting the San Francisco Giants, second base umpire Tim McClelland ejected Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez in between the bottom of the 4th inning and the top of the 5th inning after Gonzalez went onto the field to end an argument that had arisen between McClelland and Marlins right fielder Cody Ross, who had just learned from McClelland that he was receiving an equipment fine for the manner in which he reacted to striking out looking to record the final out in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Giants won the game 6-5. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. In Oakland, where the Athletics hosted the Kansas City Royals, second base umpire Mike Muchlinski -- a 2007 minor league call-up umpire -- ejected A's manager Bob Geren for excessively arguing a play on which Muchlinski ruled defensive obstruction on the A's second baseman on a play on which Geren was arguing that the Royals baserunner had interfered in the second baseman's attempt to field a ground ball. The Royals won the game 7-3. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. "Baseball's Bad Bet: To reduce the risk of a gambling scandal, baseball needs to invest in minor-league umpiring by improving the benefits of those who will hold the major-league game upright." Bruce Weber, a journalist who is writing a book about umpires, has this op-ed today in The New York Times.
Major League Baseball games played Friday, August 17, 2007: Thanks to a day-night doubleheader in Boston between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the Red Sox, Friday featured an expanded slate of 16 games. And the second game of that doubleheader produced Friday's only two ejections.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, with the Red Sox trailing 7-5, Kevin Youkilis was at the plate with a count of 0-2 and one out. On the very next pitch, on a 12-to-6 curve ball diving below the strike zone, Youkilis attempted to check his swing and foul-tipped the ball into the dirt. Home plate umpire Brian Runge did not call a foul tip, however. After Runge appealed to first base umpire Mark Wegner on whether Youkilis swung at the pitch, Wegner called a strike, meaning that Youkilis had struck out for the second out of the inning. Red Sox manager Terry Francona argued the called third strike with first base umpire Wegner, who ejected Francona. And then Youkilis argued the missed foul tip with home plate umpire Runge, who ejected Youkilis. Had the foul tip been called correctly, Youkilis would still be at the plate facing an 0-2 count. The Angels won the game 7-5. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are available here and here. Additional coverage is available from The Boston Globe; The Boston Herald; The Orange County Register; The Los Angeles Times; The Los Angeles Daily News; and The Associated Press. Yesterday's remaining three ejections occurred in Atlanta, where the Braves hosted the San Francisco Giants. Record-setting ejectee Bobby Cox, the manager of the Braves, began the festivities in the top of the 3rd inning when he was ejected by first base umpire Angel Hernandez for arguing a balk called on the Braves starting pitcher. The second ejection of the evening occurred in the top of the 4th inning when home plate umpire Mark Carlson ejected Giants first baseman Ryan Klesko for arguing a called third strike. "Cox sets ejection record; Braves manager tossed for milestone 132nd time": The Atlanta Journal-Constitution provides a news update that begins, "When Bobby Cox finally set the major league record for ejections, it was in the manner of a tree falling in the forest with no one there to hear the sound. Fans at Turner Field didn't even know Cox was ejected for the 132nd time Tuesday night, since the record-breaking ejection wasn't preceded by his familiar jaunt onto the field and cursing argument with an umpire. He broke a 74-year-old record held by Hall of Fame manager John McGraw. Cox was thrown out for arguing from the dugout after Chipper Jones looked at a called third strike to end the fifth inning of the Braves' game against the San Francisco Giants. Without any fanfare, home-plate umpire Ted Barrett walked toward the Braves' dugout and signaled to Cox that he was ejected. Until an announcement was made in the pressbox minutes later, most reporters didn't even realize Cox had been thrown out of the game."

MLB.com reports that "Cox breaks all-time ejections record; Braves skipper tossed after fifth inning for arguing strikeout."

And The Associated Press reports that "Braves' Bobby Cox sets ejection record."

In the Bronx, where the New York Yankees hosted the Chicago White Sox, home plate umpire Tom Hallion ejected White Sox knuckle ball pitcher Charlie Haeger when Haeger hit Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano with a 70-mile-per-hour pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning after Yankees catcher Jorge Posada had hit a home run to lead off the inning, Posada's second home run of the game. The Yankees won the game 8-1. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are available here and here. MLB.com also provides an article headlined "Ejection stokes Guillen's fire; Manager wants league to examine umpires' actions" that begins, "Wednesday's pregame came and went without any contact made by Major League Baseball's Commissioner's Office with Ozzie Guillen. But if a judgment of fine or suspension gets handed down for Guillen's postgame diatribe aimed at umpire Phil Cuzzi on Tuesday night, the White Sox manager appears more than ready to defend himself."
