Major League Baseball games played Friday, August 17, 2007: Thanks to a day-night doubleheader in Boston between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the Red Sox, Friday featured an expanded slate of 16 games. And the second game of that doubleheader produced Friday's only two ejections.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, with the Red Sox trailing 7-5, Kevin Youkilis was at the plate with a count of 0-2 and one out. On the very next pitch, on a 12-to-6 curve ball diving below the strike zone, Youkilis attempted to check his swing and foul-tipped the ball into the dirt. Home plate umpire Brian Runge did not call a foul tip, however. After Runge appealed to first base umpire Mark Wegner on whether Youkilis swung at the pitch, Wegner called a strike, meaning that Youkilis had struck out for the second out of the inning. Red Sox manager Terry Francona argued the called third strike with first base umpire Wegner, who ejected Francona. And then Youkilis argued the missed foul tip with home plate umpire Runge, who ejected Youkilis. Had the foul tip been called correctly, Youkilis would still be at the plate facing an 0-2 count. The Angels won the game 7-5. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are available here and here. Credit Mark Wegner with an ejection, his sixth of the season; credit Brian Runge with an ejection, his first of the season; and adjust your Umpire Fantasy League standings accordingly.
