Major League Baseball games played Saturday, May 17, 2008: A doubleheader in Boston caused sixteen games to be played Saturday. And those sixteen games produced two ejections.
In Baltimore, where the Orioles hosted the Washington Nationals, home plate umpire Tim McClelland ejected Nationals catcher Jesus Flores in the bottom of the 6th inning for arguing balls and strikes. The Orioles were winning 6-2 at the time of the ejection and held on to win by a score of 6-5. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. Additional coverage is available from The Washington Post; The Washington Times; The Baltimore Sun; and The Associated Press.
And in Philadelphia, where the Phillies hosted the Toronto Blue Jays, third base umpire Mike Winters ejected Blue Jays manager John Gibbons for arguing that a Phillies batter who was hit by a pitch had gone too far on a check-swing for strike three. The Blue Jays were leading 4-3 at the time and ended up winning by a score of 6-3. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. Additional coverage is available from The Toronto Star; The Philadelphia Inquirer; and The Associated Press.
Credit umpire Tim McClelland with an ejection, his third of the season; credit umpire Mike Winters with an ejection, his second of the season; and adjust your Umpire Fantasy League standings accordingly.
