"Ump Tells Lout To Not Shout, So He's Out": The Washington Post today contains an article that begins, "There were so few fans at Dolphin Stadium for Wednesday's game, a season ticket holder got thrown out for heckling the umpire too loudly. In the fifth inning of the Florida Marlins' 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals, home plate umpire Paul Schreiber gave the thumb to an unnamed man seated behind the plate who had been verbally abusive throughout the contest."

As regular readers of this blog have noticed, I've fallen a few days behind in updating recent Major League Baseball ejections. Because this blog only awards Umpire Fantasy League credit to umpires who eject players, coaches, and/or managers, home plate umpire Paul Schreiber will not be receiving credit for his ejection of a fan for excessive heckling. Nor does MLB.com's official box score of yesterday's Nationals-Marlins game note the ejection. Additional coverage of the fan's ejection is available at this post from "Deadspin."

Major League Baseball games played Sunday, September 2, 2007: A complete slate of 15 games played Sunday produced two ejections.

In Atlanta, where the Braves hosted the New York Mets, first base umpire Andy Fletcher ejected Mets left fielder Moises Alou in the top of the 8th inning for arguing a called third strike on a check-swing. After Alou was ejected by Fletcher, he argued the same call with home plate umpire Eric Cooper, who also ejected Alou. However, because a played can only be ejected once from a baseball game, only Fletcher is credited with the ejection because he ejected Alou before Cooper did. The Mets held on to win the game 3-2. Additional coverage is available from The New York Times; The New York Daily News (here and here); The New York Post; The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and The Associated Press.

And in Chicago, where the Cubs hosted the Houston Astros, home plate umpire Tony Randazzo ejected Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez after recording the final out in the bottom of the 6th inning for arguing a called strike three that painted the black on the outside corner of the plate. The Cubs won 6-5. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. Additional coverage is available from The Chicago Tribune; The Chicago Sun-Times; The Houston Chronicle; and The Associated Press.

In Boston, where the Red Sox hosted the Baltimore Orioles, first base umpire Joe West ejected Orioles manager Dave Trembley in the top of the 4th inning for arguing the umpires' failure to call defensive obstruction on a play. Additional coverage is available from The Baltimore Sun; The Boston Globe; The Boston Herald; and The Associated Press. You can view a related photo at this link.

And in Phoenix, where the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the Colorado Rockies, both Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and Rockies manager Clint Hurdle were ejected in the top of the 9th inning for arguing that Tulowitzki, leading off the inning, reached first base safely on a grounder to the Diamondbacks shortstop because the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. First base umpire Jerry Layne ejected Hurdle, while home plate umpire Ed Montague ejected Tulowitzki. The Rockies rallied to win 7-3 in 10 innings. You can access the box score at this link, while wraps from MLB.com are here and here. In the Bronx, where the New York Yankees hosted the Boston Red Sox, second base umpire Derryl Cousins ejected Red Sox manager Terry Francona in the top of the 7th inning for arguing an out called because the runner advancing from second base to third base went out of the base path to avoid the tag on a ground ball to the Yankees third baseman.
